To Your Enemies

The natural reaction when someone hates you is to hate them back. But we should do what is better, not easier. we should pay back hate with love.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

By showing your enemies love, at least there’s a chance they will reconsider the way they feel about you and hostility can end. If, however, you perpetuate hatred, hostility continues without end. Now, it’s possible you will show your enemies love and they will continue with their hatred. Ultimately, the only person whose feelings you have control over is you. When you let go of your hatred, you benefit with peace of mind, though, even if no one else does.

If you’ve been willing to go with me this far, perhaps you’re willing to ask the next question: How do I love my enemy?

Pray for Your Enemies

I’m not talking about “please give that person what they have coming to them” prayers. But I also don’t mean that you need to spend an hour each night asking God to pour blessings upon them. There’s a way to pray both for justice and for the hearts of those committing injustices.

If you have hate in your heart for somebody, maybe it starts with “God, I hate that person, and I don’t want to.”
